Analysis of social science concepts in social sciences course curriculum

Abstract (EN)

Concepts are the building blocks used in the learning of information, which are increasing day by day. From this point of view, Social Sciences contains many concepts along with many disciplines. While concrete concepts are learnt in infancy; abstract concepts are tried to be gained through education. Social Studies course includes the disciplines and concepts of Social Sciences. This study is a study conducted to draw attention to the concepts of social sciences in Social Studies and to evaluate the importance and place of Social Sciences concepts in Social Studies textbooks. Qualitative research method was preferred in the study. Document analysis, one of the data collection techniques, was used in the study. Firstly, the literature on what the concept is was reviewed. Then the concepts of Social Sciences were revealed. Eight basic concepts related to the concepts of Social Sciences were emphasised. The literature on these concepts was reviewed and the contents of the concepts were revealed. The inclusion of the identified concepts in the Social Studies textbooks dated 2022 was analysed. Content analysis, one of the in-depth analysis types, was preferred for data analysis. During the analysis, the main chapters, units and contents of the Social Studies textbooks were analysed according to the identified Social Sciences concepts in accordance with the survey models. Various findings were obtained as a result of the analysis. These findings were organised and interpreted. According to the results obtained from the research; it is seen that the concepts of culture, economy, family and society, which are among the concepts of Social Sciences, are intensively included in Social Studies textbooks. The concepts of religion, politics and media were used less frequently in the Social Studies textbooks compared to other concepts. The concepts of patriarchy, social stratification and inequality were not directly encountered in the textbook; these concepts are mostly used indirectly in the Social Studies textbook.
