Using of children's periodicals as a educational and learning material in social studies course

Abstract (EN)

This study was conducted to determine the effects of using children's periodicals as an educational and teaching material in the Social Studies course. In this study which was conducted with 5th grade students, the process of realizing Dreams unit was planned by using children's periodicals. Before and after the unit, the students were asked to determine the level of perception and the level of change of perception for the concepts of the unit by applying the pre and post perception questionnaire. In order to determine the level of realization of unit gains, the activities were prepared and implemented by the researcher during the course process prepared and applied on the basis of children's periodicals. In the ministry of national education syllabus, it is expected that children's periodicals will be used one-to-one during the processing of the unit. As a result of the research, it was tried to reveal the perceptions of the students about the course process which was covered with children's periodicals. The usability status of children's periodicals as educational and teaching material was tried to be determined. It is thought that this study will provide an insight as to whether children's periodicals can be used actively as an additional material in the education and training process. In this study, the effectiveness of the use of children's periodicals in social studies course as an educational and teaching material was investigated. As a result of the research, the following findings were obtained: It shows that the student responses given in the pre-perception questionnaire to the unit concepts showed a positive change in the last perception questionnaire form. It shows that students enjoyed social studies course where children's periodicals were used as an instructional material, in addtion to this showed positive development in their knowledge. As a teaching material, it was seen that children's periodicals can be used not only in social studies course but also in different branch courses.
