Investigation of the phenomenon of migration in the social studies curriculum and textbooks

This research was carried out in order to examine the phenomenon of migration in the Social Studies Curriculum put into practice in our country in 2018 and the Social Studies textbooks prepared with this program in mind. The research was designed using the document analysis method, one of the qualitative research methods. The 2018 Social Studies Curriculum and Social Studies textbooks were used as a data collection tool and data on the phenomenon of migration were obtained. Content analysis was used in the research, the curriculum and textbooks in question were examined by content analysis method. The implementation of content analysis was carried out in several stages. In this context, free code lists and categories are created and assigned by coding the data in the research; With oriented coding, codes and categories were associated and connections were established, and the findings obtained by performing the transformation stages of the findings were presented in the accompaniment of tables. In the Social Studies Curriculum, it has been determined that there are no acquisitions related to the phenomenon of migration at the 5th and 6th grade levels, and 2 learning areas and 2 acquisitions are limited to the 7th grade level. In the textbooks, it has been determined that the phenomenon of migration takes place in a limited way at the 5th and 6th grade levels, and it is a little more comprehensive at the 7th grade level compared to the other grade levels. Although the phenomenon of migration is included in the textbooks at a limited level, it has been observed that all concepts related to migration and all types of migration in the literature are not included, and the international dimension of migration is not adequately addressed. Considering the research findings and results, some suggestions were made for curriculum development working groups, authors who prepare textbooks, teachers and researchers who will study the phenomenon of migration.
