Concept teaching applications in social studies teaching: A meta-analysis study

Today, concept teaching has an important place in Social Studies teaching as it is in every field of education. In this course, various applications are used in concept teaching. However, there is no study that deals with all concept teaching practices within the scope of Social Studies course. This situation makes it difficult to see the information about concept teaching practices in the related course as a whole. Meta analysis is a method that brings together and reanalyzes the data of individual studies on a subject. In this study, it is aimed to examine the experimental studies on concept teaching practices within the scope of Social Studies course by meta-analysis method. A detailed literature review on the subject was made and the studies that were suitable for this method were included in the study. In this context, 31 studies were examined with the meta-analysis method and the effectiveness of the concept teaching practices in this course was tried to be determined. The individual and general effect sizes of the studies included in the study were calculated. According to the results of the meta analysis, the overall effect size was calculated as 2.05. When the overall effect size was examined, it was concluded that the concept teaching practices made in the Social Studies course had a great effect on the concept teaching. Based on the results reached within the scope of the study, it was suggested that Social Studies teachers should use concept teaching practices by considering their effectiveness levels.
