The views of social studies teacher candidates on table, graph and diagram plotting and interpretation skills

The aim of the present study was to determine the views of social studies teacher candidates on the skills of constructing and interpreting tables, graphs and diagrams. In accordance with the purpose of the research, case study pattern, one of the qualitative research types, was used. The research was carried out with 4th grade Social Studies teacher candidates studying at Fırat University, İnönü University, Kilis 7 Aralık University, Muş Alparslan University and Tokat Gaziosmanpaşa University Education Faculties in the 2019-2020 academic year. The study group of the study was determined based on an easily accessible case sampling, which is one of the purposeful sampling strategies. The study group includes a total of 50 people, 36 women and 14 men, on a voluntary basis. In the research, the data were obtained through a semi-structured interview form. Content analysis technique was used in the analysis of these data. The data were analyzed with the NVİVO 11 qualitative data analysis program. According to the results of the research, the overall concept of teacher candidates' skills; It has been determined that they can do a job and explain it as behavior that needs to be excavated. It has been determined that pre-service teachers make definitions for the ability to draw and interpret tables, graphics and diagrams in the form of expressing numerical data, a situation or an event with visuals. It has been determined that pre-service teachers stated that many methods, techniques and tools can be used to gain this skill. It was concluded that they considered the Social Studies course sufficient in order to gain this skill. It has been determined that preservice teachers stated that this skill facilitates understanding and provides permanent learning. This skill can also be included in other learning areas in the Social Studies Curriculum, and it can be ensured that it is a targeted skill to be acquired by students at all levels.
