Teacher candidates of social studies views on the value of patriotism and education of patriotism

The aim of this study is to determine the views of teacher candidates of social studies about the value of patriotism and education of patriotism. In the study, phenomenology which is one of the qualitative research designs was used. The sample of the study is 83 senior teacher candidates who are studied at Akdeniz University faculty of education social studies in 2019-2020 educational year. In the study semi-structured interview which is prepared by researcher with expert opinion is used as data collection tool. Data which are obtained from the sample group was analyzed by using content analysis method. When the results of the study are examined, it can be said that the teacher candidates who are study group have knowledge of patriotism and they are aware of the importance of teaching this value. They also know the relationship between the social studies course and the value of patriotism with the aim of good citizen education and they are aware of the place and importance of patriotism in curriculum. Also they know their role in teaching of value as a social studies teacher. It is concluded that the patriotic education which is given at the primary level doesn't contribute to the student in teaching of value at desired level on the other hand the content of the courses which are taken is not sufficient for the value of patriotism although a sufficient level of education of patriotism is provided in the social studies undergraduate education program. Also it is possible to say that teachers have made positive analogies to the notions of patriotism and education of patriotism and have positive thoughts about these notions.
