Opinions of the social studies teachers on the 7th grade "communication and human relations" unit: Van province sample

In this research, the opinions of the Social Studies teachers working in the elementary educations schools affiliated of Natioan Ministry of Education in the Van Province on the Social Studies 7th grade "Communication and Human Relations" unit was discussed. The research consists of five main sections: introduction, theoretical explanations, methods, findings-comments and conclusion-suggestions. In the study, the design of the study is the simultaneous triangulation design of mixed method designs in which the quantitative and qualitative data are collected simultaneously and the results are similar or close to each other. The mixed method design consists of two steps. The first (quantitative) stage is based on data gathered through the questionnaire form. The data collected through the questionnaire form is composed of five graded Likert type responses, 5 of which are related to demographic information and 18 are related to "Communication and Human Relations" unit. The generalizability study of the scale was conducted by the researcher with SPSS 17 program and Cronbach's Alpha reliability coefficient; After being proved to be "very reliable (0.68)" was applied to Social Studies teachers who participated in the research. In the second (qualitative) stage of the study, a semi-structured interview form which consisted of 3 demographics and 5 open-ended questions was applied to apply to the opinions of the Social Studies teachers. In order to The questionnaire form and the interview form are applied to Van provincial districts which in İpekyolu, Tuşba and Edremit; A working group was formed from the teachers of social studies working in elementary education schools. The study group includes 40 social studies teachers selected by the criterion sampling method in the first stage of the research and 14 social studies teachers selected by the purposive sampling method in the second stage. Analysis of the data obtained after the research, descriptive analysis and frequency analysis, one of the content analysis techniques have been used and the percentage (%) ratios of the participants variables (gender, age, professional seniority, etc.) have been shown in tables. When the findings evaluated as a result of the datas obtained, in the first (quantitative) stage, Participants responded response of "I strongly agree" with %82,5 (33 persons) and response of "I agree" with %17,5 (7 persons) in relation to item which "Communication and Human Relations" unit is extremely important; In the second (qualitative) stage of the study, %92,9 of participants (13 persons) emphasized that this unit should be given in accordance with the levels of the students in all grade levels. Therefore, the vast majority of the participants in both research groups stated that they considered the "Communication and Human Relations" unit to be extremely important and necessary. It was accepted by the majority of participants in both research groups that the internet was the most effective tool in the mass media. Also, part of the participants stated that the content of the unit is inadequate and needs further development and unit of Communication and Human Relations provided a wide variety and necessary acquisitions on the students but that both the content and the duration of the lecture were insufficient to implement these acquisitions. In the interviews, it is emphasized that the Communication and Human Relations unit is a very much important subject and that this is the unit in which students participate most willing and actively into all subject areas but that the necessary improvements in the subject area should be increased in the scope of Nation Education Ministry.
