Abstract (EN)
This study quantitatively analyzes the impact of the adaptive reuse processes of historic madrasah structures in Anatolia on their spatial configuration by employing the space syntax method. This research emerges from the need to measure the change in the syntactic identity of these structures, in contrast to traditional approaches that primarily focus on the physical preservation of historic structures. For this purpose, fundamental space syntax parameters such as integration, connectivity, and depth were comparatively examined using data obtained from analyses conducted on the original and refunctioned plans of the madrasahs. The analyses were carried out through visibility graph analysis (VGA) and convex space mapping methods. The findings of the analyses indicate that, despite maintaining its centrality, the courtyard has transformed from a social focus to a controlled transition node. Another important result is the reversal of the public-private hierarchy. It was determined that the radial circulation system has transformed into a linear system in some structures as a result of the interventions. In conclusion, this research contributes to the literature by presenting a numerical and objective evaluation model that goes beyond physical preservation, emphasizing the spatial logic of heritage structures within the broader context of sustainability. Keywords: Architectural conservation, Anatolian madrasahs, adaptive reuse, space syntax analysis.
