Examination of communication skills and socialization levels of sports sciences students in terms of demographic variables

This study aims to examine the communication skills and socialization levels of university students receiving sports education in terms of basic demographic variables. The sample of the research consists of sports science students studying at 5 different state universities in the Black Sea Region between the years 2021-2022. Information on the demographic characteristics of university students participating in the research was obtained by using the "Personal Information Form" developed by the researcher. The "Socialization Dimension" of the "Sports and Socialization Scale" developed by Şahan (2007) was used to determine the socialization levels of university students. The "Communication Skills Assessment Scale" developed by Korkut (1996) was used to determine the communication skill levels. T-test and ANOVA, which are parametric tests, were used in the analysis of the data. In cases where the use of parametric tests is not appropriate, Mann Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis tests, which are alternatives to parametric tests, were used. As a result of the analyzes, it has been determined that there are statistically significant differences in the level of communication skills of the students according to the demographic variables such as gender, the university they study at and the variable of interests other than sports, and in the level of socialization, there are statistically significant differences according to the variables related to their preferences for choosing the university and department. As a result, it has been concluded that communication skills and socialization skills are effective concepts on the demographic characteristics of university students receiving sports education. It can be suggested that the number of activities and organizations aimed at improving the socialization and communication skills of university students should be increased and trainings and seminars for these fields should be organized frequently in institutions. It is thought that this study will contribute to the researches planned to be done in the following years and to the field of sports sciences.
