The investigation of social skills and aggression levels of middle school students participating in sports activities

The purpose of this study is to investigate the social skills and aggression levels of middle school students in Diyarbakır based on their participation in sports activities. A "quantitative method" was used in the research. The population of the study consists of middle school students in Diyarbakır, while the sample consists of students selected randomly from certain middle schools in Diyarbakır. As a result of the sampling, at least 500 students were reached. The data collection tool used in the research consists of three sections. The first section includes a personal information form to gather the participants' individual and demographic data, the second section utilizes the Social Skills Scale developed by Kocayürük, and the third section uses the Aggression Scale, an updated version of the Buss Durkee Hostility Inventory. Licensed SPSS software was used for data analysis. The significance levels of the statistical analyses in the study were determined as p<0.05, with the frequency and percentage values of the data identified accordingly. Initially, differences according to socio-demographic variables were examined, and "Independent sample t-test" and "one-way analysis of variance" were applied to the data meeting the normality assumption. Pearson Correlation Test was used to assess the relationship between the two scales, and Regression tests were applied to examine the effect between the scales. A positive correlation was found between aggression and its sub-dimensions. When examining the correlation between the aggression scale and the social skills scale, a negative relationship was observed. In the regression analysis, a positive significance was found when examining the effect between the two scales. When associating the social skills of middle school students who do and do not participate in sports, it was found that aggression levels were positively correlated, with this effect being 3.8%.
