Examination of the character formation of high school students with and without sports

Sports has an important place in today's human life. Sports performed at a young age supports the formation of personality and character. The aim of this study is to investigate the character formation levels of high school students who do and do not do sports. It is a quantitative research. The universe of the research was carried out by 1 of the high schools connected to the Bitlis Provincial Center. 2. 3. and 4. It constitutes 5040 students studying in its classes. The sample of the research consists of 301 women and 730 men who voluntarily participated in the study, a total of 1031 high school students. In the thesis study, a 16-question "Demographic Information Form" prepared by the researcher and a questionnaire developed by Jang (2013), which was adapted to the Turkish version of the "Sports Character Scale" by Görgüt (2017), were used as a data collection tool. The SSPS 26 program was used to test the hypotheses in the study. Percentage and frequency, mean and standard deviations were applied in the analysis of the obtained data. Independent Samples T test was applied to the difference between the binary groups and One-Way Anova was applied to the difference between more than two groups, Turkey test was applied to Decipher the source of the difference and 0.01 and 0.05 were taken as significance. In the research, while antisocial behavior was similar in the sub-dimensions of general SCÖP according to the sports playing method variable, there was a significant difference in favor of those who played team sports in the dimensions of honesty, compassion, sportsmanship and justice. As a result of the research, the expected positive effect of sports on the character levels of high school students in the concepts of Justice, Compassion, Sportsmanship and Honesty, which are positive subcomponents, has been achieved.
