Gender in sports and coed sports: A phenomenological study

This study aims to examine the views of parents and coaches regarding gender and coed sports. For this purpose, qualitative research methods were utilized. The study is designed as a phenomenological research, which is one of the qualitative research designs. The population of the study consists of coaches who are actively working in the province of Amasya and parents of athletes involved in Taekwondo. The sample group includes 9 individuals, consisting of 4 coaches and 5 parents. As a data collection tool, a semi-structured interview form prepared by Şentürk and Sabah (2023) was used, containing 11 questions for coaches and 9 questions for parents. The data were analyzed using content analysis with the Nvivo program. As a result of the analysis, coaches reported playing an active role in raising awareness among athletes, facilitating the integration of both groups in basic training, ensuring a balance of power in training planning, and strengthening communication through games. However, they also expressed that gender-based issues were encountered in this process (such as reluctance towards coed sports and athletes quitting sports during adolescence), sports were stereotyped, and pressure was created. Additionally, it was determined that coaches believed female athletes should be approached more sensitively and that coed sports instilled confidence. On the other hand, it was found that the majority of parents were not prejudiced against coed sports, respected them, and saw sports as an important element in their children's development. Furthermore, the majority of parents considered the issue of clothing to be very important, believing it should be modest and not reveal body contours. In light of all this information, it is suggested that coaches emphasize the need for more female coaches in coed sports and organize meetings to encourage parents to direct their daughters towards these sports. Examples can be provided to parents to show that many sports now have adaptable clothing options. The positive effects of coed sports on individuals can be supported with testimonials from active athletes to help shape parents' views on the matter.
