Determining the effect of the ventilation system on thermal comfort in a standard room with radiant cooling system

Basically, thermal comfort is based on energy balance between human body and an environment. Human body sweats when the environment is too hot. On the contrary case, human body shivers when the environment is too cold. For this reason, thermal comfort effects the quality of life in daily life. The calculation method of thermal comfort is based on PMV-PPD approach which was developed by Fanger in 1970. In heating and cooling conditions, radiant panel systems provide better thermal comfort than conventional systems. Ventilation systems are used with radiant panel systems to improve Indoor Air Quality and provide fresh air need. In this study, determining the effect of the ventilation system on thermal comfort with radiant cooling system is aimed. For this purpose, a standard room was designed whose floor area is 24 m2 and heigh 3.00 m. It has two interiors and two exterior walls. For this standard room, only radiant panel system without ventilation and radiant panel system which support by different ventilation types are analyzed with ANSYS - Fluent software. Ceiling ventilation which is located next to the window creates thermal protection curtain. Thus the ventilation system blocks the heat transfer from the window in to the room. Ceiling ventilation which is located next to the window with -16 W/m2 heat flux, mixing ventilation with -14 W/m2 heat flux, passive cooling with -18 W/m2 heat flux and -22 W/m2 heat flux were not found thermally comfortable according to the ASHRAE 55 and ISO 7730 standards. Ceiling ventilation which is located next to the window with 18 W/m2 heat flux and -20 W/m2 heat flux have the best thermal comfort values rather than others according to the ASHRAE 55 and ISO 7730 standards.
