The effects of using sbs and fly ash together on the mechanical properties of hot mix asphalt

In this thesis, the effects of the using of both Strien-Butadiene-Strien (SBS) polymer in bitumen modification and with fly ash mixture modification on the mechanical properties of hot mix asfhalt were researched.In this study, limestone obtained from the Karayazi Region of Elazig used as aggregates and pure bitumen (B 160/220) provided from refinery Batman TUPRAS used as bitumen. SBS (Kraton D 1101) manufactured by Shell company used in bitumen modification and fly ash provided from Tunçbilek Thermal Power Plant were used in bitumen hot mixtures as additive materials. Three different SBS percentages (0%, 3% and 6%) of bitumen weight and instead of filler four different fly ash percentages (0%, 2%, 4% and 6%) of aggregate weight were used to evaluate 12 different mixtures. Marshall stability and flow, indirect tensile stiffness modulus, resistance against moisture-induced damage, indirect tensile fatigue and finally dynamic creep tests were carried out on the mixture specimens.It is seen that, the optimum bitumen content of mixtures determined by Marshall method decreased with the using fly ash and increased with using SBS. Generally Marshall ratio (MQ) values increased with using SBS and fly ash. In consideration of all the experiments, both using SBS and fly ash increased the stability of mixtures, stiffness at of normal temperatures, resistance to moisture demage, fatigue life and durability against to permanent deformation. Morever, only using 3% SBS in bitümen modification and only using 6% fly ash as filler resulted in similar effects. It was determined that, positive effects of these additives increased when using them together. SBS were more effective than fly ash when these additives considered separately. In addition, increasing of SBS content in the mixture decreases the effect of fly ash.
