This thesis explores the labour conditions and precarities of frontline I/NGO workers that operate for refugees by a focus on the neoliberal order that transformed the NGOs' position and their intraorganizational relationships -as they take on the role of serving public/beneficiary groups. The analysis provides an account of how neoliberal transformation of work leading to precarity affect NGOisation and refugee work in Turkey. The study analyses how precarity manifests itself, through qualitative interviews with 17 frontline workers that operate for refugees in 15 I/NGOs in Istanbul, Turkey. The interviews revealed prominent insecurities experienced by frontline workers, stemming from structural, managerial factors, and in relation to the content of their refugee work. The empirical sections present and expose the multi-layered precarity faced by NGO workers operating for refugees. This study also provides a discussion on workers' agency, their strategies to cope with their precarious setting. The academic work regarding civil society organizations in Turkey are mostly on their role in democratization and from a perspective from above, focusing on different actors including the state, the EU, and CSOs and their representatives. This research aims to fill the gap not only about organizations working in the humanitarian aid and development field in Turkey but also on research regarding the labour conditions of the civil society organizations -with a perspective from below.
