Teucrium polium L. in type 2 diabetic rats: Effects on the oxidant and antioxidant systems

Type 2 diabetes; it is a metabolic disease with hyperglycemia due to deterioration of insulin secretion and / or effect of insulin. In this study; male of Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups as Control (C), Control + Teucrium polium L. extract (C + TPE), Diabetes (D), Diabetes + Teucrium polium L. extract (D + TPE). Type 2 diabetes were formed by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (single dose 65mg / kg) + nicotinamide (45mg / kg). Teucrium polium L. plant extract a rate of %5 was added to drinking water of C + TPE and D + TPE groups for 21 days. The effects of rats on blood glucose and oxidant-antioxidant systems were investigated. Blood glucose, triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), plasma and tissue malondiadehit (MDA) levels were significantly decreased in D + TPE rats. At the same time, significant increase in superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) levels and paraoxonase (PON1) and arylesterase (ARE) enzyme activities were observed in C + TPE group and arylesterase activities in D + TPE group. Finally in this study; it was determined that T. polium extract had antihyperglycemic and antihyperlipidemic effects in streptozotocin-nicotinamide induced diabetic rats. It was also found that T. polium had positive effect on improving oxidative stress caused by diabetes as antioxidant due to significant increase in antioxidant enzyme activities in both C + TPE and D + TPE groups.
