Comparision of short term results of tension free vaginal tape (TVT) and transobturator tape (TOT) operations

Objective: Although there are many types of surgical proseduıres for stres urinary incontinence, the gold standard surgical prosedure is not certain yet. The aim of this study is to compare the short term efficacy and complications of tension free ?vaginal tape (TVT) and transobturator tape (TOT) used to treat female stres urinary incontinence.Materials and Methods: This study was performed on 70 patients admitted to our clinic with SUI or MUI between June 2006 and October 2007. 50 patients underwent a transobturator tape and 20 patients underwent a tension-free vaginal tape either alone or with other procedures. Demografic characteristics, physical and pelvic examination results, Q-tip and Boney tests, sistometry result, ultrasonography, quality of life questionnaires, type and duration of surgery, intraoperatif complications, preoperatif and postoperatif hematocrit values were recorded. The patients were evaluated in the first and third months of operation again. Results were evaluated statistically by using student t-test and paired t-test.Results: No intraoperatif complication was encountered with TVT and TOT operations in our study. By using IIQ-7 and UDI-6 forms, postoperatif improvement of symptoms were seen. Difference between the duration of TOT and TVT operations was statistically significant (p<0.05). No statistically significant difference was found according to duration of postoperatif hospitalization and early postoperatif complications like voiding dysfunction, leg pain and urinary tract infection(p>0.05).Conclusion: TVT and TOT are effective prosedures in the treatment of stres urinary incontinance with similar short term success and complication.Key Words: Stress urinary incontinence (SUI), Tension-free vaginal tape (TVT),Transobturator tape (TOT), short term efficacy, complication
