Students' attitudes towards translanguaging in higher education in an EFL context

This study analyses the perspectives of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students about translanguaging strategies in higher education, aiming to evaluate its impact on language learning experiences, comprehension, and engagement. This research seeks to improve the understanding of effective translanguaging strategies by analysing students' perspectives and reactions, hence fostering inclusive multilingual learning environments. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining quantitative data from a 5-point Likert scale questionnaire with qualitative insights from open-ended interviews. Statistical studies, encompassing both descriptive and inferential methods, were conducted on data from 461 participants, accompanied with thematic content analysis of interview responses. Research demonstrates that students hold diverse views on the exclusive use of English compared to the incorporation of their native languages. While many acknowledge the benefits of translanguaging for understanding intricate topics and reducing anxiety, some express concerns regarding an overreliance on their native language, believing it may hinder English immersion. Gender and proficiency level were recognised as significant factors, with female students demonstrating more positive attitudes and lower-proficiency learners employing translanguaging strategies more extensively. The research demonstrates that translanguaging often occurs naturally as students switch languages while note-taking and collaborating with classmates. Interviews emphasised its role in clarifying complex topics, fostering social connections, and boosting self-confidence. However, concerns about overuse highlight the need for a balanced approach. Recommendations include the prudent application of translanguaging, tailored strategies for diverse proficiency levels, and teacher training in effective bilingual practices. By addressing these characteristics, translanguaging can function as a successful tool for promoting inclusive, multilingual EFL classrooms and enabling broader application in global higher education contexts
