Abstract (EN)

This thesis consists of three independent studies on sustainability. The first study aimed at exploring the sustainability situation of selected South Asian countries by using indicators of weak and strong sustainability. The study employs descriptive statistics analysis and covers the period between 1990-2014. The findings suggest that South Asian economies such as Bangladesh, Maldives, and Nepal satisfy weak sustainability criterion, while India and Pakistan are the worst-performing countries and fail to satisfy sustainability criterion. The result also indicates that none of the South Asian countriessatisfies the criterion of strong sustainability. The second study constructs a model to explore the potential relations between income inequality and carbon dioxide emissions of developing countries by dividing the (whole (global)) sample into sub-samples (uppermiddle-income and low and lower-middle-income countries. This research uses the system generalized method of moments (GMM) methodology in a dynamic framework to address the issues of unobserved individual countryoriented effects and potential endogeneity. The empirical outcomes confirm the negative correlation between income inequality and carbon dioxide emissions, and the results do not change when the aggregate sample is divided into sub-samples. In all three groups, results indicate the existence of a negative relationship between income inequality and CO2 emissions. Finally, the third study analyzes the impacts of the determinants of individuals' pro-environmental behavior around the globe. The study employs Logit methodology and covers the period throughout 1981-2018. The study finds education, trust, and institutional quality as important factors affecting the pro-environmental behavior of individuals.
