Abstract (EN)
INFLUENCES OF REGULATORY FOCUS, CORE SELF EVALUATIONS AND AGEON BIASES IN PERCEPTION AND CHOICEYASEMIN KISBUABSTRACTThis study attempts to understand how individual differences in personality and age impactthe influence of biases in driver?s perceptions and choices. Biases in perception (unrealisticoptimism, illusion of control) as well as in choice (framing) create variations in behaviors andexposure to risks. An individual differences perspective is investigated where individuals aremore prone to be biased depending on their core self-evaluations (e.g., self-esteem, locus ofcontrol) and regulatory foci (prevention vs. promotion orientation). For example, with respectto framing bias, only drivers? with a chronic prevention orientation (i.e., focus on avoidingnegative outcomes and on maintaining stability and security) are expected to manifest aregular framing effect, taking risks when a loss frame is presented and choosing the surealternative when a gain frame is presented. On the other hand, a reversed framing effect isexpected in the case of promotion oriented drivers (i.e., focus on achieving positive outcomesand on opportunities for self-enhancement). Furthermore, from a developmental perspective,it is hypothesized that among people with promotion focus, older adults will be more likely toshow reversed framing bias compared to younger adults due to increasing use of heuristicprocessing (as opposed to analytic processing) and that among people with prevention focus, older adults will be more likely to show framing bias. Data collected from 150 taxi driversrevealed that although most of the taxi drivers demonstrated illusion of control, participantswith negative core self evaluations show more learned helplessness and less illusion of controlcompared to drivers with positive core self evaluations; and drivers with preventionregulatory focus were more prone to manifest risky choice framing bias. Results are discussedin terms of their implications for bias literature and risk taking in traffic.
