Abstract (EN)
Films, akin to other artistic mediums, serve as significant cultural sources for analyzing social transformation. Together, their narratives are often influenced by the very dynamics of these transformations. Analyzing films necessitates a comprehensive consideration of both their content and form, particularly within the historical and social contexts that shape them. Syrian cinema possesses a rich historical narrative that merits scholarly examination from this perspective. Evidently, the sociopolitical change of Syria is reflected in its cinematic productions, suggesting that such transformations have substantially influenced the content and stylistic preferences inherent in these films. The core focus of this thesis is to explore the historical social transformations within Syria and their manifest traces in the nation's cinema. It seeks to address the suitable question of how these historical transformations have impacted the development and evolution of cinematic forms and content in Syrian films. The aim of this study is to outline the progression of Syrian cinema from its early periods to the present day. To achieve this aim, the thesis will investigate the relatioship between films produced in Syria and the social transformations, exploring how these changes have shaped the national cinematic identity, or find out if there is a trend or ekol. This scholarly work contributes to the articulation of a comprehensive cinema history specific to Syria, positioning itself as a valuable resource for both current and future research endeavors. Moreover, this thesis holds significant importance as it seeks to enrich the lacking body of literature dedicated to analyzing Syrian history and culture through the lens of cinema in relation to social transformation. Grounded in qualitative research methodologies, the study conducts an extensive literature review. It begins by tracing the social transformations in Syria, categorizing them according to major historical events and corresponding periods. Subsequently, it examines the films produced within these contexts in a chronological manner. Lastly, the work highlights prominent Syrian filmmakers and their contributions, framed within the contexts of historical and political narratives, technical and stylistic considerations, as well as cultural and social themes.
