Integration of Syrian groups into the Turkish education system: The example of Hoşgör Neighborhood

In this study, the integration of Syrian students who came to Turkey due to the war in Syria into the Turkish education system was examined. In this context, the opinions of the participants were taken. Qualitative research method was preferred in order to analyze the problems experienced by the teachers who attended the courses of the Syrian students. The data were obtained by using the content analysis method, which is generally preferred in qualitative studies. The universe of this research consists of all 8th grade Syrian secondary school students studying in Gaziantep province, Şahinbey district, Hoşgör neighborhood in the 2022/2023 academic year, and the teachers who teach these students. The sample of the research consists of 50 Syrian students who are 8th grade students and 10 teachers who teach these students at Şehit Mehmet Nuri Akdemir Secondary School located in Hoşgör neighborhood of Şahinbey district of Gaziantep province. In the study, semi-structured interviews and questionnaires were used to collect the data. According to the results of the research, Syrian students are the subject of problems such as social cohesion, inadequacy in learning Turkish, lack of belonging, exclusion, and marginalization. It has been revealed that teachers who teach Syrian students feel inadequate in teaching refugee children, cannot communicate effectively with parents due to language problems, and they face problems such as crowded classrooms.
