Evaluation of serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D, calcium, phosphorum and parathyroid hormone levels in children with delayed eruption

Aim: Eruption is a dynamic process that continues from the beginning of the development of the tooth to its participation in function. Various mineral and hormone deficiencies; it can cause delayed eruption, hypomineralization, and deterioration of alveolar bone structure. The aim of this study is to determine the oral changes in pediatric patients with permanent tooth eruption delay by looking at 25-hydroxy Vitamin D (25(OH)D3), Calcium (Ca+2), Phosphorus (P), Parathyroid Hormone (PTH) levels and their relationship with each other in Diyarbakır province. Material and Method: Of 936 pediatric patients aged 6-14 years, who applied to Dicle University Faculty of Dentistry, Pediatric Dentistry Clinic, had no chronic disease, had not received hormonal treatment in the last 3 months, and were examined, 101 of them met the criteria, were included in the study. While 60 children with delayed eruption were included in the patient group, 41 children were included in the control group. Taking the eruption of the central teeth in the anterior and the eruption of the first molars in the posterior as criteria, the eruption delay was determined by reference to the American Dental Association (ADA) age-exposure graph. Serum 25(OH)D3, Ca+2, P and PTH levels were measured. Results: IBM SPSS V.21 package program was used for statistical analysis and p<0.05 was considered significant. The age and gender distribution between the groups is homogeneous. There was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of P value (p>0.05). Vitamin D and Ca+2 in the patient group; in the control group, the PTH value was found to be significantly lower (p<0.05). Conclusion: Due to its physiological effects and its role in metabolic pathways, the importance of vitamin D level has increased. Ca+2, P and PTH values, which play a role in its regulation, should also be checked. While vitamin D provides calcium and phosphorus absorption from the intestines; it is inversely related to PTH level. While Ca+2 and P levels increase in proportion to vitamin D, PTH value decreases.
