Examination of driver's awareness levels on the use of alcohol and mobile phone in traffic: A survey/field study example

With the continuous increase in the world population and the rapid development of technology, there has been an increase in the number of vehicles and, accordingly, in traffic accidents. Increasing traffic accidents cause material and moral losses. Factors such as driver faults, vehicle defects, negative effects of the environment, and the geometric structure of the road cause traffic accidents. After the causes are determined with the right methods, traffic safety can be increased to higher levels with the measures taken. Since the basis of traffic safety studies is based on correct information, minimizing traffic accidents is possible with access to correct information. In order to ensure efficiency in the fight against traffic accidents, it is necessary to have real data. For this reason, it is extremely important to keep traffic accident information healthy and to record it reliably. When the causes of traffic accidents that occurred in 2022 are examined, it is seen that the alcohol consumption rate is 0.88%, and this rate has not changed much in previous years. During mobile phone inspections carried out at different times in 2022, it was determined that 8 403 drivers used mobile phones at the wheel within six days. In this study, a relationship was established between alcohol and mobile phone-related traffic accidents, and control mechanisms that increase traffic safety were explained. A consisting of thirty-three questions on "Investigation of Awareness Levels of Drivers on Alcohol and Cell Phone Use in Traffic" used by drivers, covering the whole of Turkey, was conducted and suggestions were made by interpreting the results of the survey.
