Determining the consciousness levels of dairy producers regarding green business practices and environmental sustainability: The case of Ardahan province

This study aims to analyze the Consciousness levels and practices of dairy producers operating in the Ardahan province regarding environmental sustainability and green business practices. The research particularly focuses on assessing the environmental sensitivity levels, environmental responsibility awareness, and green business approaches of small-scale enterprises operating in rural areas. A qualitative research method was adopted in this study, and data were collected using a semi-structured interview form. The interview form consisted of 15 main questions and sub-questions, which were developed with input from field experts and tested through a pilot study. During the data collection process, face-to-face interviews were conducted with a total of 13 business owners or managers from enterprises in Ardahan who voluntarily participated in the study. The sample was determined using the principle of maximum variation, ensuring the inclusion of enterprises from different districts. The qualitative data obtained were analyzed using the content analysis method. The interview data were coded using the MAXQDA qualitative data analysis software, and themes were identified through an inductive approach. The research findings revealed that dairy producers in the region possess a basic awareness of environmental sustainability; however, there are significant deficiencies in the practical implementation of sustainable practices. Notably, there were substantial shortcomings in adopting environmentally friendly production techniques, waste management, renewable energy utilization, and environmental investments. It was determined that the understanding of environmental responsibility among these businesses was mostly limited to fulfilling legal obligations, while voluntary green practices were rarely adopted due to cost constraints, lack of knowledge, and insufficient operational capacity. The study concludes that in order to strengthen the environmental sustainability practices of dairy producers in the region, it is essential to enhance training programs, increase public support, and promote local cooperation initiatives.
