Abstract (EN)
In the evaluations made around the world, historical city centers are trying to survive as a bridge between the past and the future in terms of preserving social, cultural and historical values and carrying them to the future. Looking from the past to the present, the development of industrialization has been effective in the development of technology and the increase in economic activities. The experience of this change has started to drive individuals from rural areas all over the world to city centers, and city centers have been insufficient in the face of this violent migration, and city centers have begun to shift towards new settlements as they cannot meet the demands. World cities have experienced economic, political and physical transformations after the change, and this has caused deterioration in the city centers. After the first and second world wars covering the whole world, the physical deformation of cities came to light and urban transformation projects came to the fore as a solution to this situation. Urban transformation projects foresee the demolition and re-urbanization of all buildings, so many historical city centers in Europe have been affected by this renewal. In the face of this event, the concept of urban renewal, which appears as an alternative to the idea of urban transformation, has started to gain importance especially in historic city centers. In the last century, urban renewal projects, which are clearly known in historical city centers, have remained on the agenda as indispensable for areas of historical importance. The subject of this research is the evaluation of Malatya Battalgazi Suriçi, which has been a city center for more than 1900 years, about Revitalizing with Spatial Transformation. The aim of this thesis is to shed light on the practices related to the protection of socio-cultural values, improvement of physical, economic, social and historical structure and revitalization of Battalgazi Suriçi. In this study, it is planned to determine the factors that cause deterioration in historical city centers correctly and to contribute to the determination of strategies for them. When historical city centers are evaluated, each center has its own characteristics and user profile, but also has its own characteristics in its problems and solutions. Considering this idea, it is understood by world examples that we need to adopt the idea that the unique features of the area where the applications to be made in the historical city centers are located, can be best understood by providing a participatory study with the user profile. As a research method, academic data on the subject were collected and then domestic and foreign examples related to the subject were examined. Spatial evaluations, historical data, socio-cultural structure, demographic characteristics, physical structure, economy, education and health related to the subject will be examined and problem determination will be made for Suriçi. According to the problem detection method, first academic research was carried out and then physical analyzes were made. After the physical research, a survey was conducted to determine the user data, thoughts about the area and the structural situation. Keywords: Urban Revitalization, Urban Transformation, Urban Renewal, Malatya-Battalgazi, Historical City Centers.
