Ballets Russes reflections on stage design according to continuum of historical development

In 1898?1906, Russian artists established the (Mir Iskusstva) group in St. Petersburg and made studies on Russian art. Accordingly, Diaghilev (1909-1929) founded the Ballets Russes community on the same axis and with the same artists. Diaghilev presented ballet in the form of a theatrical show by combining the life and artistic gaze of the XX. century on stage. Upon the dead of Diaghilev in 1929, it completed the most important considered phase. This togetherness, which bears the feature of collective art structure, has come up to present by gaining a ecletic property. Ballets Russes that presented its shows in Europe and America as a tour community has influenced social life as well in addition to the world?s aesthetic life. These ballets, which can also be about public life or tales, have created a lasting influence particularly on stage design and fashion. Every show was considered as a turning point for stage design and the first attempts of plastic and technical innovations were demonstrated in the shows of this community. In its stage design where Diaghilev emphasized the ethnical elements of first period Russia, he worked with Russian painters Bakst, Benois, Gonçharova and Larionov. His working with Picasso in the Parade ballet was accepted as the beginning of modern art as subsequently many other important artists such as Delaunay, Derain, Matisse, Braque, Miro, Chirico, Gabo, Pevsner and Dali, who contributed in today?s art with their designs, have prepared stage designs for Ballets Russes. These innovations in décor and costume opened new doors for choreography that have also been effective in the development of modern dance alongside the Balette art.
