Abstract (EN)

Design, which is a human-specific ability, cannot be emancipated from the individuum/individual that is the reason of its production. Designs that are being formed from social and cultural behaviours, respond to all kinds of vital requirements from individual's security and sheltering to realisation of self all the design areas give opportunity to individuals for their diversifying acts and experiences. These opportunities are possible in the case of access of individuals to products, spaces and systems of the design. For designs to be attainable, perceptible and utilizable, it is discernible that their accessibility is a prior condition. The matter in hand with this awareness, aims to reveal the multi-dimensional relationship between the designing act and the concept of accessibility. In this frame, the physical and cultural dimensions of the concept have been analysed along with the meanings and extents of accessibility. It is revealed that design, existing not only physically but also socially and culturally, should conjointly supply to all the extents of the accessibility. It is also unveiled that the physical aspect of the concept is related with individual's body and experience, while the perception and socio-cultural extents are related to individual's sense-making act, thereby the accessibility occurs in the event of integration of body and mind. In case of losing one of these extents, it is remarked that the potential of equal access is eliminated. In this frame, the direction towards essential accessibility in design approaches has been tried to be revealed through evaluations of each corresponding historical period. The obtained data has been studied in an integrated way, with the aim of constituting awareness towards interior design Keywords: Designing, Spatial design, Accessibility, Physicality, socio-cultural and perceptual accessibility, Contemporary design approaches.
