The individual emerges as the most significant component of society, which is a notion with multiple components and each individual in society becomes a part of the built environment even if they are not always aware of it. Understanding how society and the built environment interact is crucial to comprehend the function of architecture in everyday existence. This reciprocal interaction does not always produce beneficial results and is a major contributor to many societal issues. In this regard, one of the methods mentioned in this topic for reinforcing this dialogue is the participation of the individual in the design of the environment around them. Considering these, society and the built environment have been examined from different perspectives and the study is focusing on the typology of housing because of its relevant place in this dual interaction. The study's selected focus point of participating in planning and design attempts to provide a theoretical basis for participation and move forward through comparison. In this sense, it is aimed to make a comparison between France –selected because of its significance in the history of participative initiatives in housing– and Türkiye. Case studies are analyzed to comprehend how this dialogue is influenced and how it might result under various parameters of various cultures. This research offers a unique opportunity to examine and critique, to go further into and comprehend the concept of participation from various viewpoints and through different geographical contexts as a tool for sustaining the dialogue between society and the built environment.
