The regeneration of critical size bone defects is known to be an obligation to use the graft. Many graft materials are used for this purpose. This study aimed at investigating the effect of natural coral, hydroxyapatite (HA), tricalcium phosphate (TCP) and platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) used as bone healing accelerator in experimentally induced bone defects and comparing the finding obtained. In the study, 24 New Zealand rabbits were used. A total of four defects, two from the upper proximal metaphysis of both tibia of each rabbits were created. Twelve of ninety-six defects performed were left empty to serve as the control group and the remaining defects were filled with coral, HA, TCP, PRF, coral+PRF, HA+PRF and TCP+PRF, twelve for each. Clinical and radiographic examinations, immediately and the 15th, 30th, 45th and 60th days after the operation were performed. Postoperative 30th and 60th days, the rabbits, in a way each group containing six defects, were sacrificed and histopathological examinations were performed. Radiological and histological examinations showed that the bone healing in PRF defects was better than other. As a result, PRF was observed to considerably improve early bone healing, which suggested that it can readily be used as a good graft material.
