Investigation of antibiotic resistance in cases of recurrent urinary tract infections

Urinary tract infections are the most common infections of childhood after upper respiratory tract infections. If treated inappropriately and inadequately, urinary tract infections cause irreversible complications like hypertension and end-stage renal failure.Our aim in this study was to check the resistance of the recurrent urinary tract infection agents to antimicrobials.E. coli was the leading bacterium with 66.9% in our isolates. This is in accordance with the results of many studies in the literature. The following bacteria were Enterococcus spp. with 12.9%, Enterobacter spp. and K.pneumonia with 5,6%, P.aeroginosa and S.aureus with 3,2% and Ent.kloake, Proteus spp. and Acinetobacter baumanii with 0,8%.When we evaluated the resistance of the bacteria to antibiotics, we found that the most commonly resistance occurred to ampicillin with 79.1%. AMC (66,7%), SAM (64,5%) and SXT (50,6%) were the following antimicrobials. The least resistance was occured to imipenem with 2%. High resistance that occured to those antimicrobials may cause to unsuccesful therapies by those antibiotics. This study showed that aminoglycosides have been saving their effectiveness because of the low resistance occured to them and they may be preferred firstly for empiric therapies in recurrent urinary tract infections.Furthermore, the resistance variations between our study and other studies revealed that resistance may differ from region to region. Therefore, each region must investigate its own resistance studies and the therapies must be applied according to the results of these studies.
