Teacher views on the importance of teacher-student communication on basic education

The main objective of this study is to analyze how teacher-student, student-parent communication is established. Also, the study examines the positive or negative effects of the way of communication due to the views of the teachers. As well known, the personality and attitudes of a teacher are crucial especially in basic education. Besides, teachers are expected to develop a lingua franca with students and their parents. In our era, communication instruments and techniques have become widespread. So this issue has gained more importance. In this research, a relational screening model was implemented. The model is one of the general survey models. The general survey model is among the quantitative research methods. As a technique, the questionnaire technique was implemented. In accordance with this purpose, a literature review has been conducted, basic approaches and academic studies have been studied. According to the researches in Turkey, it is seen that some teachers in schools are under the influence of the behavioral education system. Besides, such teachers sometimes behave oppressively on students. Also, such teachers can hardly acknowledge the childish behavior of the students. Yet, the student-centered education model is in effect since 2005. The main target of this model is to find out the knowledge and capabilities of the students. In order to determine whether teachers have been using the proper language or not, a survey was conducted on 596 teachers from 30 different primary schools in Adapazarı central district, Erenler, Serdivan and Karaman districts of Sakarya province.In order to identify the level of communication between teacher-student and teacher-parents, 40 attitude scale questions were prepared. The questions were firstly replied by a research staff group (268 members). Exploratory factor analysis waimplemented on the obtained data. Having analyzed these, the data obtained from 596 teachers were subjected to confirmatory factor analysis. After that, 2 open-ended questions were added. The subhead format of the survey is as such: the importance of communication in human relations, the importance of student-teacher communication, the evaluation of the teacher, student, executive, parents communication in education and assessment of the effects of communication on study environment. As a result, it is understood that the teachers in primary schools of Sakarya province attach importance to communicate with students and their parents. According to this research, married teachers have a better level of communication compared to unmarried ones. In addition, married teachers have a better level of communication with parents compared to unmarried teachers. Another result of the research is that professional experience and term of office of teachers have an important role in developing communication skills with students. The answers to the questionnaire show that education is more coherent with the student-centered education model. Thus, it is seen that communication in education contributes to student success accordingly. Keywords: Sakarya, teacher, student, communication, success
