Social and economic situation of Ezinepazar township according to Temettuât Registers

In this study, the social and economic situation of Ezinepazar, a township of Amasya sanjak in the province of Sivas, in the 19th Century is tried to be put forth in the frame of temettuat books. The aim of our study is to bring light to the socio-economic factors of Ezinepazar in the framework of temettuat registers. The sources of our study taken from the Ottoman Archives of the Prime Ministry have been digitalized and transcribed. Data on the settlements have been acquired from the transcribed documents. Acquired data have been analyzed and compared to other temettuat studies on Amasya and a meaningful connection has been tried to be made between the socio-economic situations of the settlements in the registers then and now. This study includes 26 villages of Ezinepazar in 1845. The most crowded one is Kale with 67 households. At that time, there were 770 households in Ezinepazar. Nearly all of the population was Muslim and earned their living through agriculture and livestock. It is ascertained that the villages have had above-average income in general when we take into account the economic situations of the villages. It is seen that there are income tax (vergü-yi mahsusa), cattle tax (ağnam) and tithe (aşar) when the taxes paid to the state are taken into account. Our study is different from other studies in terms of the fact that the non-Muslim population in the settlements was few and the occupational diversity was limited to agriculture and livestock.
