Tempera technique and its use in the course of painting workshops on undergraduate level

Abstract (EN)

Tempera is one of the oldest painting techniques. It has been used for centuries in a wide geography from Ancient Egypt to the reigns of India and China. This technique was ignored for a few centuries until it started to be used again in the 19th century, and gained importance from the 1930s onwards. While this technique is still practiced in painting courses at undergraduate level in many countries, it is considered that many universities in our country do not put enough emphasison tempera technique in Art Education Departments and that their students do not have enough knowledge about the technique. With this study, tempera technique and how this technique is used in painting courses in the Department of Painting Education, It is aimed to determine the situation by revealing how the students learning the technique and apply it as a form of artistic expression. In this study; one of the qualitative research method, "case study" was used. The research was carried out at in Bursa Uludag University, Faculty of Education, Department of Fine Arts Education in 2018-2019 academic year. The participants of the study was consisted of a group of 8 students who took the Painting course. The data in this study; were obtained by semi-structured interviews, observation and document analysis. "Thematic analysis" was used in the analysis of the data obtained in this study. According to the findings of the study, it was observed that the participants did not have prior knowledge about the tempera technique before the activity, but there were differences in their interest and knowledge levels afterwards. Positive changes in the opinions of the participants about the tempera technique was observed.
