Thomas Hope'un Anastasius, or memoirs of a Greek eserinde gezi, din ve politika

This dissertation aims to analyze Thomas Hope's long-forgotten yet influential novel Anastasius, or Memoirs of a Greek (1819) in terms of travel, religion, and politics. It examines travel writing with historical facts as well as Hope's personal experiences in the Orient, which shaped his novel to a great extent. It also demonstrates the parallelism between Hope's observations and the Orientalist point of view on religion and politics, as he systematically demonizes the East and Islam along with the Turks and Arabs. The study also exemplifies how religion and travel writing are used by the West as tools to penetrate the deepest institutions of the Orient. Finally, the study sheds light on Philhellenism which was popular in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and its representations in Hope's anti-hero.
