Cost analysis of Type 1 Diabetes illness

Purpose: Type 1 diabetes that one of the chronic disease, is economic burden to individuals and society. Cost analysis of T1D is so important in terms of guiding decision makers. It is aimed to guide the decisions of health policy makers by calculating the costs of T1D as total costs and lifetime costs according to the perspectives of the patient, hospital and reimbursement institution. Method: The data of the study were obtained by using the hospital information system, face-to-face survey method, expert opinion, hospital records, Health Practice Communiqué (SUT). It has been calculated annual total cost of per patient and lifetime cost. Findings: The burden of T1D has been calculated as annual per patient. The hospital personal cost for patients with T1D was estimated at 63.5₺ and the general service cost was 11.85₺. The reimbursement institution has estimated the cost of treatment 204₺ and the cost of drugs 1602₺ for patients with T1D. Annual medical device cost was calculated as 3.602.45₺ for patients who did not use insulin pump and 7.483.25₺ for patients who did not use insulin pump. The patient has estimated estimated to be 3.129,15₺ for the patient who did not use insulin pump, 5.990,82₺ for the patient using insulin pump and 17.945,25₺ for the patient who using sensor. Annual total cost was calculated to be 6.807,25₺ for the patient who did not use insulin pump, 11.753,42₺ for the patient using insulin pump and 23.711,42₺ for the patient using continuous blood glucose measurement system. Results: Increasing cases of type 1 diabetes cause a significant part of health expenditures to be allocated to type 1 diabetes. Patients ought to managed the disease in order to minimize their costs. In cases where the condition can not be controlled, the patient will experience hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia, thus increasing costs.
