Abstract (EN)
Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between hedonic hunger status and disease self-management and glycemic index/load of diet in individuals with type 2 diabetes. Method: The study was carried out on 160 type 2 diabetes individuals who applied to Akdeniz University Hospital Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases Polyclinic between December 2021 and April 2022. The socio-demographic characteristics, nutritional habits, diabetes self-management and hedonic hunger status by evaluating the participants and, anthropometric measurements were taken. The daily average energy, macro and micronutrient contents and glycemic index and load of their diets, were calculated over the 3-day food consumption records of the participants. Results: It was found that the group with high hedonic hunger score had less type 2 diabetes self-management compared to the group with low (p<0.05). Weight, body mass index, body fat percentage and weight, neck, waist, hip circumferences and waist/hip, waist/height ratio were found to be higher in the group with high hedonic hunger scores compared to the group with low hedonic hunger scores (p<0.05). Blood glucose, HbA1c and triglyceride values (157.5±64.3 mg/dL, 7.54±1.84%; 161.9±66.6 mg/dL, respectively) of individuals with low hedonic hunger it was found to be lower than the individuals with high hedonic hunger (184.9±63.3 mg/dL; 8.27±1.96%; 196.3±92.1 mg/dL, respectively) (p<0.05). No statistically significant relationship was found between the hedonic fasting status of the participants and the dietary glycemic index and load (p>0.05). Conclusion: High hedonic hunger was found to be associated with low type 2 diabetes disease self-management. Hedonic hunger; it can have a negative effect on body components, anthropometric measurements and biochemical parameters. In order to ensure effective management of diabetes, it should be aimed to evaluate the hedonic hunger status of individuals and to plan a nutritional therapy with a low glycemic index and a low glycemic load. Keywords: glycemic index, glycemic load, disease self-management, hedonic hunger, type 2 diabetes.
