Serum procalcitonine levels in patients with thyroid function disorder and changes with treatment

Özet (EN)

Thyroid gland consists of follicular cells involved in synthesis of thyroid hormones and parafollicular cells synthesis calsitonine. procalcitonin (PCT) is a prohormone is converted to active form calsitonine as a result of some intracellular proteolitic events in the parafollicular cells in thyroid gland. This study compared serum procalcitonine levels in case of thyroid disfunction (hiperthyroidism or hipothyroidism) with in case of euthyroidy after treatment. In this way we aimed to find whether a relationship between thyroid disfunction and serum procalcitonine levels. The forty patients diagnosed as thyroid disfunction at Gaziantep University Medical Faaculity Department of Endocrinology were included the study. The 7 (%17,5) of the patients in the study is men and 33 (%82,5) of the patients is women. If the patients participating in the study diverged in terms of thyoid disfunction, there is 19 (47.5%) patients with hiperthyroidism and 21 patients (52.5%) with hipothyroidism. According to the results of the study there was not detected any relationship between serum thyroid hormone levels and serum procalcitonine levels. Because of no relationship determined between thyroid diseases and serum procalcitonine levels; serum procalcitonine levels may be useful in the diagnosis of disorders like systemic inflamation, infection and sepsis in patients with thyroid disorders.
