Investigation of serum Isthmin-1 levels in patients diagnosed with papillary thyroid carcinoma

Although thyroid cancer accounts for only %1 of all malignancies, approximately 600,000 new cases are diagnosed worldwide each year. Even though its incidence continues to increase, papillariy carcinoma generally has a good prognosis. Nevertheless, in advanced-stage thyroid cancers diagnosed late, the mortality rate is approximately 6-8 per 1,000,000. Ġn our study, we investigated whether serum isthmin-1 (ISM1) levels could serve as a guiding biomarker for diagnosis, follow-up, and surgical decision-making by comparing patients diagnosed with papillery carcinoma and those multinodular goiter. The data in our study were obtained through a retrospective review of electronic records registered in the hospital database. A total of 98 individuals were included in our study, consisting of 68 patients who underwent total thyroidectomy between 2022 and 2025 at the Department of Genereal Surgery, Fırat University Hospital, and 30 healthy individuals as the control group. The patients were dividied into three groups; those with nodular goiter, those with papillary thyroid cancer and those without thyroid disease. Blood samples taken from the individuals included in the study were analyzed for serum isthmin-1 levels in the laboratory of the Department of Physiology. As a result of our study, it was observed that serum isthmin-1 levels in patients with papillary carcinoma were higher compared to those with nodular goiter and healthy individuals. This finding has led to the belief that serum isthmin-1 levels may shed light on early diagnosis and treatment. Keywords: Thyroid cancer, papillary thyroid cancer, isthmin-1
