Özet (EN)
The prevalence of thyroid cancers is quite high. The rate of papillary thyroid cancer cases has significantly increased in the recent years. We frequently encounter differences of interpretation in the differentiation of papillary thyroid cancers, particularly of their follicular variants, from other follicular neoplasmsIn our study, we evaluated expressions of CD56, P63, and HBME-1 immunohistochemical markers in order to differentiate papillary thyroid carcinomas from follicular neoplasms. Between 2005 and 2008, 40 cases diagnosed with papillary carcinoma and 40 materials that belong to follicular neoplasm cases, consisting follicular adenoma, follicular carcinoma, and follicular tumors, of which malignity potentials have not been possible to be determined, were examined in Dicle University Medical School, Department of Pathology.Arithmetic means and standard deviation (SD) values for constant variables were used as defining statistics in our study. For the comparisons of the averages of the two groups, Student?s t tests comparing the means of two independent groups were used. Cross tables of discrete variables were prepared and analysis was conducted using the Yates corrected chi-square test.CD56, P63, HBME?1 immunohistochemical markers were applied to the selected paraffin blocks. Follicular neoplasms and papillary carcinoma groups were compared with regards to age, sex, tumor size, and staining with immune markers. There was no statistically significant difference between follicular neoplasms and papillary carcinomas in terms of age, sex, and tumor size. Both follicular neoplasms and papillary carcinomas were found to be more frequent in the middle age group and the female sex, in line with literature data.No statistically significant difference between follicular neoplasms and papillary carcinomas were observed in terms of CD56 expression.A statistically significant difference was found between follicular neoplasms and papillary carcinomas with regards to HBME-1 and p63 expression. We have concluded that these markers can be utilized in the differentiation of thyroid papillary carcinomas, particularly their follicular variants, from follicular neoplasms.
