Abstract (EN)

Within the scope of this thesis, a total of 1010 coins from the excavation findings of the ancient city of Tlos have been examined. The literature acknowledges coin minting during the Dynastic Period, the Lycian League Period, and the III. Gordianus Period in Tlos. The thesis is divided into two main sections for a more detailed evaluation of the Tlos excavation coins and a better understanding of their interactions with the Tlos Mint. The first section, titled "Tlos Coin Mint" explores the coins known from the literature as Tlos issues. Additionally, autonomous bronzes from Tlos, not found in scientific literature but identified through auction catalogs, are also studied in this section. The first section explains how the Tlos Mint was active between 540-360 BC and the coin minting tradition followed by the Tlos Dynasty. Coin minting in Tlos continued with autonomous issues between 190-180 BC and during the Lycian League process from 167 BC to 43 AD. Finally, Tlos coins were minted in the years 242-244 AD, during the last years of the reign of III. Gordianus. The second section, named "Coin Finds of the Ancient City of Tlos," evaluates all coin finds from the years 2005-2021. Among the cataloged coins are those dated to the Hellenistic Period, the Roman Imperial Period, the Byzantine Period, as well as coins from the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the Islamic Period. One of the most significant results obtained in this thesis is that the weight standards and motif repertoires of Hellenistic Period Lycian coins are not independent of regional interactions. The kitharophoric Lycian League silvers, minted between 167-77 BC, were influenced by the plinthophoric Rhodian coins. Similarly, the weight standards of Lycian League bronzes or autonomous bronzes from the Lycian Region were influenced by the II. Ptolemaic coin reform. All coins found in Tlos excavations and dated to the Hellenistic Period are within the scope of this reform's influence or outside of it. Roman Imperial Period coins found in Tlos excavations mainly exhibit imperial propaganda, while Byzantine Period coin finds emphasize Christian propaganda. The coins found in Tlos not only demonstrate historical continuity and cultural diversity but also indicate their use for various commercial or religious purposes. Keywords: Tlos, Lycia, Coin, Mint
