Evalution of the sultan caftan patterns in Topkapı Palace Museum in 15th and 16th centuries in terms of illuminations

In the 15th and 16th century, the lands gained by the Ottoman Empire through conquests increased rapidly and became stronger in military and administrative fields was a period in which valuable developments were experienced in the scientific and economic fields. These developments were positively reflected in art and it was a period when valuable works were produced in many fields. Numerous works have been produced in many fields such as calligraphy, illumination, miniature, tile, binding, carpet and weaving. The sultan's robes from the 15th and 16th centuries in the Topkapı Palace Museum, which are the main research subject of the study, are one of the most concrete examples reflecting the art of the period. In addition to being used as an element of status, kaftans also appear as works of art that combine magnificence and elegance. It is seen that the art of decoration enriches itself by renewing itself in every period and is applied in many areas. The motifs seen in the works of the period were also applied in the art of weaving on specially produced sultan caftan fabrics. This study consists of three main sections in which the art of illumination and artisans of the period, the characteristics of the sultan's caftans and their decoration are examined. In the evaluation section, 18 robes belonging to 7 different sultans were examined and their similarities with the works of that period in terms of motifs and composition were investigated. As a result of research; it was concluded that the patterns used on the caftans were created with the motifs used in the art of tile, illumination, hand-drawn painting, miniature and carpet-rug arts, which are among the arts of the period
