Gaziantep Panorama 25 December Museum as a memory place in the context of social memory

Memory, which work as a bridge between past and future, gains meaning while transmitting past events to future generation, meanwhile, 'Collective Social Memory' related with detecting, observing, analyzing and understanding the connections between personal remembrances, also frames the connections between remembering individuals. In previous societies, while collective social memory creates itself, in modern society, lack of ritual habits cause a spiral of demolition and reconstruction of memory. In the context of social memory, the act of remembering and forgetting, memory destruction and memory construction appear as concepts that seem to be opposite to each other but express the same result. Therefore, there is no one-way relationship between social memory, which is a constructable concept, and social identity, because memory builds identity, identity builds memory. In this construction process, societies create their own memory places and spaces since there are no longer memory environments or said places and spaces. One of the places of social memory, that reconstructs and transfers the past to today is museums. Chosen as study area, '25 December Panorama Museum', has been evaluated as to what kind of social memory space it corresponds to in terms of its current situation, purpose, collection, mission and style. It has been tried to determine how much the city of Gaziantep contributes to the veteran (Gazi) identity it has and how it responds in the society. For these purposes, questionnaire and interview techniques were used to measure the value of the museum in the society or in the city. The findings obtained from the questionnaire were evaluated in accordance with its purpose by creating a table with frequency analysis.
