Engineering geology of the Tosya town centre

Our country often subject to Natural hazards due to its geological features, topografic structure and the climatic loses in properties.Furthermore, natural hazards causel, economy as well as the human lives. Since, it is difficult to avoid the natural hazards, therefore, attempts should be made to minimize such damages. Thus, when the dwelling sites are selected, the most suitable areas should be selected, and the maximum preventive measures should be taken against the natural disasters. The aim of this thesis, is to assess the suitability of the Tosya Town Centre in term of the dwelling and make suggestion to minimize the probable natural hazard damages. Field studies were carried out at various times in order to recognize the area and the geology of the area.The geological units present in the are a are determined and their distribution are controlled on the already existing map. The standart penetration test values optained by the İller Bankası personal in the soil borings were evaluated in order to determine engineering properties and distribution of the soils present in the area. Additionally, the seismic velocities (Vp and Vs) obtained by the seismic refraction method in this area is given. The results of the microtremor recordings made at sixtythree locations in the study area are presented and the resonance frequency period and accelaration increase of the soil under dynamic conditions are determined. These results are compared with the results obtained by the seismic method. In the light of the studies carried out in the study area the important features are assessed for the suitability of the Tosya Town Centre in terms of dwelling.
