RATS Nour ALAFANDI Master Thesis, University of Gaziantep, Institute of Medical Sciences Department of Medical Biochemistry Thesis Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Seyithan TAYSI August 2017, 77 pages In this study, we aimed to investigate the protective effects of propolis on nitrosative stress resulting from ionizing radiation. Thirty-six male rats were used. The groups consisted of 4 subgroups: 2 control, radiotherapy (R), Propolis + R. All of the groups except the control groups received a single dose of 5 Gy on the first day of radiotherapy. Biochemical parameters of the brain tissue were measured by spectrophotometry to determine whether protective effects of propolis were present. As a result of the study, it was determined that NO, NOS and ONOO- values were significantly higher in the brain tissue from the rats in the radiotherapy group than in the Propolis + R group. These results suggest that the use of the substance against the harmful effects of ionizing radiation, which has a protective effect against the adverse effects of nitrosative stress caused by propolis radiation, will provide beneficial results.
