Özet (EN)

Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of tobacco use, alcohol use, alcohol use disorder, and the associated factors among individuals aged 20 years and older living in Trabzon province. Materials and Methods: The study population consisted of 609,222 individuals aged 20 years and older residing in Trabzon province. The sample size was calculated as 1,620 individuals using the Open Epi program, considering an expected prevalence of tobacco use of 28.3%, a 2.5% margin of error, a design effect of 1, and a 30% non-response rate. At the end of the study process, 1,730 individuals were reached. The districts of Trabzon to be included in the study were determined according to the socioeconomic development levels of the province. The sample to be reached was selected through stratified random sampling by age and sex. The questions in the questionnaire, which consisted of 40 items in 3 sections, were administered to participants through face-to-face interviews. Results: In Trabzon province, the prevalence of any tobacco product use was 33.1% (95% CI: 30.9–35.3), while the prevalence of cigarette smoking was 32.7% (95% CI: 30.5–34.9), waterpipe use 5.3% (95% CI: 4.3–6.4), roll-your-own cigarette use 4.1% (95% CI: 3.2–5.1), cigar/pipe use 2.0% (95% CI: 1.4–2.7), and e-cigarette use 1.3% (95% CI: 0.8–1.9). The prevalence of alcohol consumption within the past year was 16.0% (95% CI: 14.3–17.8), lifetime prevalence of alcohol use at least once was 25.8%, and the prevalence of alcohol use disorder was 4.4% (95% CI: 3.6–5.5). Conclusion: In our study, the prevalence of any tobacco product use, alcohol use, and alcohol use disorder in Trabzon province was higher than that reported in studies published in recent years. Age, sex, educational status, personal income, household income, and the socioeconomic development level (SEGE) of the district of residence were identified as risk factors for the prevalence of tobacco use, alcohol use, and alcohol use disorder. These findings indicate the need for solution-oriented community interventions primarily targeting these risk factors. Keywords: prevalence of tobacco product use, alcohol use, alcohol use disorder
