From tragedies to family constellations emotional healing

The Family Constellation technique is an applied group work where the family system is visualized based on the individual's experiences. It systematically analyzes family relationships and brings a systemic perspective to problems occurred in this context. During the session, the disrupted order and family-tie structure within the family system can be reestablished. The Family Constellation work is conducted in a theatrical manner, with representatives roling real family members. Emotions related to resolving the issue are surfaced, thus facilitating emotional healing. The Family Constellation technique has similarities with ancient Greek tragedies in terms of its application, subject matter, and therapeutic aspect. Tragedies depict mythological stories, often involving relationships between gods and humans. However, Aristotle also mentions the catharsis effect alongside the artistic function of tragedy, indicating that tragedies evoking emotional responses and contribute to emotional healing. Tragedies, with their healing potential, have influenced various therapeutic techniques. Jacob Levy Moreno introduced the therapeutic aspect of tragedies into the field of psychotherapy under the name psychodrama. Virginia Satir expanded upon this concept by introducing the Family Sculpture method. In the 1990s, Bert Hellinger, further, developed these techniques and introduced the Family Constellation system to the world. Thus, the Family Constellation technique has been theatrical practice rooted in tragedies. The main objective of this thesis is to determine that the roots of the Family Constellation technique lie in tragedies. Its sub-objective is to demonstrate how the effectiveness of the Family Constellation technique in emotional healing is supported by various branches of philosophy and how its processes are related to philosophy.
