Abstract (EN)

As being the visual signs of human languages, text used for recording informations which is the main process for the development of art, science and technology. With the passage from hand writing to printing technologies, typography became the current issue of the visual design of text. At the end of 20th century, with the invention of digital technologies, digital communication systems came on board. While new media was becoming prevalent typographic design process acquired new dimentions.In this thesis, to make clear the difference of typography in traditional and new media, the development of typography from the beginning researched. On learning and performing the typographic design in new media, it is needed to examine the researches of academists and analyses the designed samples in a wide range. It is seen that the academic reseaches including definitions and classifications, doesn?t have a common terminology yet. Literature research from academical resources made for making proposals on defining and classifying the typography in new media. Typography in new media divided into three parts according to their main characteristics as ?static?, ?dynamic? and ?interactive?. Static typography divided as ?fixed? and ?serial presentation?, dynamic typography divided as ?motion? and ?morphing?, interactive typography divided as ?static interactive? and ?dynamic interactive?. Film titles from cinema, the typographical applications of web sites, and experimental interactive typography projects are taken as samples on demonstrating the proposals.With this proposal, it is aimed to define the characteristics of typography in new media with its new dimentions added by the digital Technologies, and it is aimed to classify all textual usage in digital era under one main title. The proposed classification empasized the temporal, dynamic and interactive dimentions of typography in new media.
