Social and occupational burnout, being one of the important modern day issues, is usually seen in personnel whose work requres literal human relationship and who are exposed to intensive work pressure. Many factors like stressful working conditions, excessive workload, insufficient staff and equipment, adverse physical work conditions, economic failure can lead a burnout. A burned-out person can show physical, psychological and behavioral signs such as chronic fatigue, headache, sleep and eating disorders, forgetfulness, agression, frustration, desperation, lack of self esteem and self confidence, paranoia, tearfulness, extreme susceptibility, unwillingness to go to work, increase in smoke and alcohol use, difficulty concentrating, showing no interest in people who they offer service and acting as if they were inanimate objects. In this study, individual and organisational aspects of the conception of burnout were investigated. Coping with burnout was discussed in terms of individuals and organizations. The effects of demographic variables on burnout among nurses working in intensive care units in T.C. Trakya University Health Center for Medical Research and Practice. A questionnaire which includes personal data and Maslach Burnout Inventory was distributed. As a result, women, married, worked less than a year and more than eleven years, worked in intensive care unit less than a year and between five years to ten, would like to change the job at the first chance and would like to work up to pension, pessimistic about his professional future, dissatisfied with the working environment were found to be experiencing burnout more frequently.
