Özet (EN)

The nearly two-centuries-long history of Turkish-American relations is definitely different from relations with other countries. One of the most important reasons for it is the vital need of the U.S. for Turkey due to its geo-strategic position, because after the World War II in the two-block world order the U.S. took over the crown of the Western block from England and entered into the global competition with the Soviet Union. On the other hand, politics of the Soviet Union in the post-war era threatening the territorial integrity and sovereignty rights of Turkey resulted in its rapprochement with the U.S., another superpower of the Cold War era.The military intervention of May 27, 1960 represents the period when Turkey's position within the Western alliance was reconsidered and in this context its relations with the United States experienced a period of stability and intensity. The emphasis on the commitment to NATO and CENTO in the radio declaration made after the military intervention and the subsequently signed bilateral agreements clearly showed that determination and will.Military government of the early 1960s, the Cyprus crisis of the period when the CHP-led coalition government was in power, Johnson's Letter to Inonu containing threats and insults, the disappointment Turkey experienced during the Cuban Missile Crisis and other similar events has led to new domestic policies and public response.Keywords:Turkish-AmericanRelationships, Cyprus Crisis, Johnson's Letter, Cuban Missile Crisis?
